As we embark into 2020, everybody could use just a little bit of positivity to kick start their new year. Lucky for us, Sam Smith is here to do exactly that.
On Sunday (Jan. 5), Smith took to their Instagram account to share a photo showing the star sitting topless on a boat while on vacation, living their best life. In the caption, Smith spoke about how, in the past, they didn’t necessarily feel comfortable enough to have their shirt off in public, let alone post a photo of it. «Feels so good to have my top off on holiday. Spent all my life hiding my body from the sun,» they wrote. «The last year my skin has been soaking in that LIGHT.»
Smith added that they wanted their fans to see themselves in that same light, and urged them to push past the negative emotions that can often cloud that joy. «Don’t let anyone or anything stop you from feeling that kiss from above you beautiful humans,» they said.
A number of stars showed their support for Smith, including trans activist Munroe Bergdorf, singer Parson James, and even recent Golden Globe winner Taron Egerton, who commented, «You look gorgeous.»
This is not the first time that Smith has opened up about their past struggles with body positivity. All throughout 2019, Smith often used their Instagram page to speak about the evolution of their own self-image, and how they’d come to love their body. «Some may take this as narcissistic and showing off but if you knew how much courage it took to do this and the body trauma I have experienced as a kid you wouldn’t think those things,» they wrote in a post last February.
