I try to give The Chainsmokers the benefit of the doubt because they are an easy target and have delivered some of the better dance-pop anthems of recent years (“Don’t Let Me Down” and “Paris”), but it’s hard to shake the feeling that “Sick Boy” is not very good. The duo, which has bounced from one PR nightmare to the next, make a statement about America’s skewered priorities on their new single, but it comes across as self-pitying instead of defiant or damning.
“I live in a prison that I build myself, it is my religion,” Drew Taggart sings over a pompous dance/rock production. “And they say that I am the sick boy — easy to say when you don’t take the risk, boy.” It just gets weirder from there. “Welcome to the narcissism, we’re united under our indifference.” I guess that’s a fair comment on America’s current inability to give a fuck, but what’s with the whiny bridge? “Feed yourself with my life’s work, how many likes is my life worth?” Give me a break. Also, haven’t they already covered this on “Honest”?
Kudos to guys for trying to reinvent themselves, but I’d take “#Selfie” over this any day. Watch the surprisingly good video up top. (They spent the money because the special effects look great).
