Tonight (August 27) the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards took place at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Hosted by Katy Perry, the event featured a collection of performances from the likes of Pink, Fifth Harmony, Shawn Mendes, Miley Cyrus and more! The evening’s big winner Kendrick Lamar, who was nominated for 8 awards and went home with 6 Moon Persons, opened the show with a medley of “DNA” and “Humble.” The 30-year-old rapper brought out some advanced pyrotechnics, performing one of the biggest and boldest sets during the show. He was followed almost immediately by Ed Sheeran who crooned his song of the summer contender “Shape Of You” with the accompaniment of a full band and switched things up by bringing out Lil Uzi Vert to add a rapped portion to the striding song.

It was a dramatic night for Fifth Harmony, who referenced the departure of fifth member Camila Cabello at the beginning of their set. The quartet performed two tracks from their third LP, the slinky buzz track “Angel” and bubbly lead single “Down”alongside Gucci Mane. Executing choreography with ease, it was a strong moment for the group. Lorde had one of the most confusing moments of the evening. After coming down with the flu and losing her voice the Melodrama siren danced across the stage to “Homemade Dynamite.” It was commendable to perform while under the weather but absolutely confusing.

Demi Lovato traveled to Las Vegas to perform her unapologetic “Sorry Not Sorry”poolside. It was a confident set for the 25-year-old hitmaker and will hopefully give the anthem a push up the charts. Miley Cyrus meanwhile channelled the 50’s for her performance of “Younger Now,” delivering strong vocals while recreating the Elvis-themed video. Shawn Mendes delivered another standout moment while performing his latest hit “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.”

Up and coming rapper Cardi B performed her fan favorite “Bodak Yellow” at the pre-show. She was joined by Bleachers who performed their summer anthem “Don’t Take the Money” and Best New Artist winner Khalid who performed his breakout hit “Location” outside the venue. Fellow newcomers Julia Michaels and Kyle performed during the official show, but were relegated to performing during commercial breaks. Alessia Cara took the stage twice to perform her inspiring single “Scars to Your Beautiful” and then again alongside Logic and Khalid for a stirring rendition of “1-800-273-8255.”

This year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient Pink performed a quick medley of her biggest singles, riding across the stage and effortlessly moving from hit to hit in front of clips from her iconic videography. She ended her set with a dance-heavy performance of current single “What About Us” that was truly a highlight of the evening. Although she didn’t swing from the ceiling, the 37-year-old was one of the hottest moments of the full evening. Another impressive moment came when DNCEunited with Rod Stewart for “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.”

Katy Perry brought her “Swish Swish” collaborator Nicki Minaj onstage to close out the evening. Playing up the theme from the just-released video, Perry dressed up as a basketball and bounded around the stage with unending energy. Nicki appeared from behind a moving set piece while dressed as a referee and rapped her verse surrounded by a group of dancers. The evening came to a close after the performance, as basketball balloons rained down on the crowd. Check out the performances down below!
